We began making candles in our kitchen/dining room in May 2021. Our ministry was expanding an existing apparel printing shop to include a retail space; and we wanted to include handmade items for sale to the public. We were also sourcing gently used clothing and household items and purchasing wholesale boutique items to fill the shelves and racks of our little store.
Our little enterprise started to take up quite a bit of room and we eventually took over the loft of our barn. So, what began as Freedom Expressions somehow morphed into Loft and Found. So, how did we come to call ourselves the Green Bird Candle Co?
In 2020 we became the happy owners of a little green Parrotlet whom we named Pico. We found out very quickly how sensitive a little bird’s system is, when she got chewing on a light fixture and ended up almost dying from lead poisoning. Long story short, we managed to get her to an avian vet as soon as we realized she was sick; and she was saved by a very wonderful Doctor named Laura Wade. It took her a about a month to bounce back completely, but today Pico is a healthy, spunky and somewhat ferocious little green bird.
Which brings me to the name…Pico has somehow managed to completely capture our hearts and my husband (Pastor John) will on many occasions work her into his Sunday sermon. For instance he might say, “put the Lord above everything else in your life…above the dog, the cat, the little green bird, etc.,”….You get the idea. So, the term ‘green bird’ has been kind of a little inside joke around the campus here. It wasn’t long after we got Pico, that Chris and Sarah decided they would like to get a bird of their own…and soon Ezekiel (Zeke) a Green Cheek Conure, made his way to their household.
After the scare we had with Pico we had to make sure that if we were going to be burning and testing candles, waxes, wicks and fragrances; they had to be as safe as possible to use around our birds, which are known to have extremely sensitive respiratory systems. We can assure you that our candles are as clean burning and safe as we can possibly make them; and still be beautiful and wonderfully fragrant.
It is also our desire to give glory to God in everything we do so you will see that every candle has a name and a scripture that inspired its creation. There’s generally a story behind every one of our candle names; we hope you’re inspired to find out the back story! It’s our goal to always point to our Lord and Savior, Jesus…who rescued us from a life of destruction and gave us this new and beautiful, exciting life to live!
